This is a staff Attorney position that gives the successful candidate the opportunity to serve a vital role in carrying out the important work and mission of the Montana Department of Corrections. Competencies:

BUDGET ANALYST

The Budget Analyst position is responsible for performing complex and critical services requiring individual analysis and evaluation. The Department of Corrections manages a $650 million biennial budget with unique funding sources and program guidelines The fluctuating nature of these revenue sources require effective fund control methods enabling effective revenue forecasting and comprehensive expenditure reporting.
Specific job duties include:
- Draft, prepare, and submit budget change documents (BCD’s).
- Participate in executive budgeting, legislative appropriations processes, and the long-range budget-building processes.
- Design, prepare, and generate budget reports, documents, and budget-forecasting models containing multiple funding types for agencies.
- Research and prepare fiscal notes and reports for executive and legislative fiscal impact of legislative bill proposals.

The Montana Department of Corrections is seeking a highly organized Construction Project Management Specialist to lead and coordinate a large, active portfolio of construction and infrastructure projects that directly support safe, secure, and effective operations. This position is responsible for tracking and monitoring numerous projects simultaneously, maintaining schedules and risk controls, and ensuring issues are identified early and elevated for resolution. The specialist will regularly brief department leadership on project status, risks, and milestones; prepare concise written and verbal updates; and help drive timely decisions that keep projects on track and aligned with DOC operational needs.
A key function of this position is serving as the primary DOC liaison and project owner between the department, the Architecture and Engineering Division, contractors, internal facility staff, and other external partners. The specialist will coordinate meetings; document and follow up on action items; track progress on projects such as new housing units, program buildings, a new women’s prison, facility remodels, roofing projects, and other capital improvements; and ensure DOC subject matter experts’ requirements are clearly communicated and addressed. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a construction environment, managing details for a vast portfolio of concurrent projects, and proactively coordinating information flow so that DOC leadership stays informed and projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.

The Correctional Officer is responsible for the overall safety and security of inmates, staff and visitors of Montana State Prison and Montana Correctional Enterprises. Correctional Officers help ensure the institution is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the inmate population.
- Supervise adult male felons while in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off property. Correctional Officers are responsible for a wide variety of security duties relative to the safe, orderly and cost effective operation grounds, performing on including, but not limited to, conducting thorough inspections and searches of inmates, buildings and grounds, performing security observation, preparing documentation regarding institutional matters such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs, operating security equipment, recognizing critical behavior, restraining and controlling offenders, and responding to emergencies.
- Enforce and follow rules and regulations including but not limited to written and/or oral directives, post orders, and special instructions in addition to policies and procedures which dictate daily, routine and emergency procedures.
- Serve as a member of the Unit Management Team to oversee all aspects of the basic needs and welfare of adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off property. Participate in case management and classification procedures.
- Provide intervention for adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison by facilitating and/or overseeing counseling, medical care, first aide, clothing & laundry, janitorial and housekeeping supplies, transportation of inmates, meals, movement, jobs and other services as required.
The hourly rate of this position will increase by $1.00 per hour or 2.5%, whichever is greater, effective July 1, 2026, in accordance with HB13.
QUALIFICATIONS
The knowledge, skills and abilities for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
- High school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license are required.

We are seeking a dependable, skilled Electrician to maintain the critical electrical systems that keep our correctional facility safe, secure, and fully operational. In this role, your expertise directly supports the infrastructure relied upon by staff, inmates, and the community every day. Working in a correctional environment, you play a key part in ensuring safety, maintaining essential facility operations, and supporting a stable setting that enables rehabilitation and programming. Your leadership also provides inmates with valuable job skills that contribute to successful reentry.
- Install and maintain facility wiring, lighting, and electrical control systems.

INMATE PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR
MONTANA WOMENS PRISON

The Inmate Production Shop Supervisor will lead the daily operations of the Industries complex and the Prison Paws dog program at both the Montana Women’s Prison in Billings and Riverside Unit in Boulder. This position is in charge of creating a safe, structured, and productive environment for both staff and inmates. This role is responsible for enforcing security, safety, and sanitation standards while directing and coordinating inmates involved in production and processing activities. The supervisor will plan work schedules, assign tasks, and monitor production sequences to ensure goals are met. They will also inspect materials, equipment, and finished products to maintain quality and compliance with established standards. In addition, the supervisor will supervise and provide hands‑on training in equipment operation, safety procedures, facility policies, and work techniques, ensuring inmates have the guidance and structure needed to succeed.
Beyond daily operations, the Inmate Production Supervisor manages all recordkeeping related to production, inventory, deliveries, regulatory requirements, and customer service needs. The MATIC Crime Investigator enhances statewide decision‑making and proactive law enforcement by collecting, analyzing, storing, and disseminating criminal intelligence information related to individuals, groups, organizations, or events connected to major criminal conspiracies and projected criminal activities (MCA 44‑5‑103).
This position is responsible for developing an integrated information‑sharing system that connects all Department of Corrections (DOC) field functions, including secure facilities, Probation & Parole, Interstate Compact, and juvenile facilities. The investigator also develops and delivers training to DOC staff on identifying potential intelligence information and following established reporting procedures.
The MATIC Crime Investigator works with personnel at all levels, from the Director to newly hired officers, and has coordinated access to all DOC facilities and programs. As a member of the Montana Analysis & Technical Information Center (MATIC), Montana’s designated Fusion Center, the investigator serves as the DOC’s liaison to MATIC and provides support for external investigations as needed. The investigator represents the DOC in matters involving anti‑terrorism efforts and law enforcement intelligence.
This is a grant‑funded position and is contingent upon continued grant funding. The end date of funding is currently unknown.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Probation and Parole Officer position, guided by the Department of Corrections (DOC) mission, plays a central role in managing the correctional population, promoting public safety and encouraging offenders to make positive life changing decisions for their future.
- The officer cooperates with, and solicits information from, the public and criminal justice system and supervises and counsels 80-100 offenders.
- Must have skills and abilities to equally balance social work and law enforcement duties.
- The officer conducts pre-sentence investigations and makes placement recommendations concerning those offenders sentenced to DOC. These investigations are completed with cooperation from other criminal justices’ agencies and by using investigative skills; knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to probation, parole, incarceration, rehabilitation and treatment programs, as well as knowledge of behavioral science.
- The officer then makes recommendations for rehabilitation, treatment plans, conditions of probation, the need for incarceration, and appropriate level (i.e. local jail or Montana State Prison) to the District Court and Parole Board through a written pre-sentence investigation report.
- Officers refer offenders to appropriate resources or programs using departments supervision standards, a risk and needs assessment as well as knowledge of state and community resources and monitors the progress of the client for compliance.
- Officers investigate alleged violations of probation or parole using knowledge of policies & procedures pertaining to violations, search warrants & investigations.
- Officers arrest and detain violators and testify in district court and information hearings relative to sentencing or revocation of client’s probation or parole status.
- Officers are trained to handle situations if probation & parole offenders or inmates become hostile & pose a physical threat. This requires the use of Oleoresin Capsicum “O.C. Spray” and firearms and carrying handcuffs.
- Work is of the nature that Officers may work varying schedules to include nights and week-end hours and that the Officer may be called back to work at any hour of the day or night and be available 24/7 when called upon to assist any Department of Corrections Facility or Law Enforcement Agency. The Officer needs to physically make an arrest, defend selves, in high-risk volatile scenarios in and away from the office.
- Travel for job may be required up to 10% of the time in addition to travel for training.
The hourly rate of this position includes the statutory increase, effective July 1, 2026, in accordance with HB13.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Probation and parole officers must have at least a college degree in a related field such as criminology, psychology, social work, sociology, or guidance and counseling and some formal training in behavioral sciences.
- Exceptions to this rule must be approved by the department. Related work experience in the areas listed in subsection (1)(b) may be substituted for educational requirements at the rate of 1 year of experience for 9 months formal education if approved by the department. All present employees are exempt from this requirement but are encouraged to further their education at the earliest opportunity. (b) Work experience that may be substituted for the educational requirements in subsection (1)(a) includes experience in the areas of corrections/detention, criminology, education, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, law, law enforcement, social work, sociology, psychiatric nursing, or guidance and counseling.
